We had high hopes for this trip, spurred on by the picturesque images we saw on social media. But when we arrived in Tirana and made our way to Vlore for a week-long getaway, reality hit hard. The country was marred by litter and plastic—a stark contrast to the pristine paradise we anticipated. You can make the pictures look great but close up it really needs some structure and waste management help form the government.

It's disheartening to see such a beautiful place suffer due to poor waste management. It's clear there's a gap in the governing system, but I believe the people of Albania have the power to drive change. With a shift in community values towards better waste and water management, they could truly preserve the stunning natural beauty that surrounds them. In Albania, we discovered bustling fresh food and meat markets brimming with an array of fresh produce. Additionally, charming bakeries tempted us with delectable pastries and treats, perfect for a little indulgence. While we appreciated the culinary diversity, we found that traditional Albanian fare didn't quite suit our palates.

In Vlore, we observed a predominantly male-dominated atmosphere. However, amidst the challenges, we found moments of humility and connection. Watching the older gentlemen gather in the park to chat and play games was a poignant reminder of the importance of staying socially engaged as we age.
We took a stroll to Kanina Castle, a magnificent ruin with a panoramic view of the town and harbor. Despite its historical significance, it's now a relic of past conflicts. The trek uphill was a surprise for the kids, but the breathtaking scenery made it worth it. I defiantly would take a picnic and cold refreshments to enjoy at the top.
Heading further south to Sarande, we found cleaner waters and opted for a boat ride to Corfu, a Greek island. The journey was a bit pricey, but exploring the town and stumbling upon the Old Fortress was a highlight, offering a glimpse into centuries of history.
Venturing into the countryside, we discovered the Blue Eye Springs—a tranquil oasis amidst lush greenery. Though swimming wasn't permitted, the crystal-clear waters were a sight to behold, reaffirming nature's enduring beauty.
Our journey concluded with a scenic bus ride to Athens, tracing the coastline and reflecting on the memories we'd created. Despite the challenges, our trip to Albania was a testament to the resilience of both its people and its landscapes.
