Departing from the bustling metropolis of New York City proved to be a journey fraught with unexpected challenges. Despite our initial concerns, our flights proceeded smoothly, even with our baggage slightly exceeding the weight limit—an oversight that spared us from additional fees. However, the inclement weather lingering over New York City caused a nearly two-hour delay to our flight—an inconvenience magnified by the early hotel checkout time, leaving us with an extended period to navigate within the confines of the airport.
Upon finally boarding, fatigued and restless, we embarked on our journey to Portugal, with Lisbon as our first destination. Though greeted by intermittent sunlight, the lingering chill in the air remained palpable. Excitement coursed through our family as we anticipated our inaugural European experience, eager to immerse ourselves in the rich tapestry of culture and history awaiting us.
Lisbon, akin to a meticulously crafted masterpiece, captivated our senses at every turn. From the intricate cobblestone pathways to the architectural marvels, each element exuded its own charm. Regrettably, our time in this enchanting city was limited to a mere two days—a realization that left us yearning for a return visit to fully explore its myriad offerings.

Securing bus tickets (very, very cheap), we ventured to Albufeira a two-and-a-half-hour trip from Lisbon, a picturesque beach town where we would reside for the ensuing two weeks. Unbeknownst to us, Albufeira held a special allure for UK travellers, reminiscent of Bali for Australians. As we explored the sun-kissed shores, it became evident that Albufeira was synonymous with revelry—a bustling hub adorned with a three-kilometre stretch of vibrant pubs, clubs, and eateries, where soccer (or football) monopolised the televisions. We experienced a newfound sense of freedom when we opted to rent a car for three days, embarking on a picturesque journey along the Algarve coast. Our itinerary was brimming with visits to quaint towns, each revealing its unique treasures. The majestic cliff formations of Ponta Da Piedade left us in awe, though the chilly weather deterred us from kayaking the coast. Undeterred, we opted for a leisurely stroll along the cliffs, offering unparalleled views that exceeded our expectations.
Despite the inclement weather that was unexpected at the time (Wilder's curse), Portugal's allure remained undiminished, unveiling its splendour through breathtaking vistas, tantalizing culinary delights, soul-stirring melodies, and a rich tapestry of history.
It imparted upon us the invaluable lesson of savouring life's moments at a leisurely pace, prioritizing cherished bonds with family and friends, and indulging in the culinary delights that enrich the soul.

Portugal, with its blend of beauty and serenity, offered a timeless reminder of life's simple joys, urging us to embrace each moment with gratitude and presence. As we venture out hopeful of sun these next three days, we will be packing and getting ready to hit the ground running in Rome.
